IPL – Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

Refresh, brighten and renew your skin with advanced IPL

At The Skin Specialist Nurse, we offer IPL treatment to target a range of common skin concerns including skin rejuvenation, facial vessels, pigmentation, acne and the illumiFacial.

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a versatile light-based treatment that can help improve overall skin tone and clarity while also targeting specific red and brown lesions. It is an excellent option for clients who want visible skin improvement without invasive treatment or significant downtime.

What is IPL?

IPL works by delivering carefully controlled pulses of light into the skin. Depending on the concern being treated, that light can target pigmentation, broken facial vessels and redness, or stimulate fibroblast activity to encourage new collagen and elastin production. This means IPL can do more than simply brighten the skin on the surface. It can also help improve texture, soften the look of fine lines, and create a clearer, more even complexion over time.

One of the benefits of IPL is that it can be tailored to your skin concerns. Some clients come to us because their skin feels dull, uneven or tired, while others are more concerned by redness, acne breakouts or sun damage. Following a consultation, we can advise whether IPL is the right treatment for your skin and create a plan based on your goals, skin type and the condition being treated.

What IPL Treatments Are Available?

Skin rejuvenation

IPL skin rejuvenation is ideal for clients who want to address the visible signs of sun damage and early ageing. ReBright technology is used to target brown and red discolouration while also stimulating collagen and elastin, helping the skin appear brighter, smoother and more even. This treatment can support concerns such as uneven skin texture, dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, redness and pigmentation, making it a great choice for overall skin refreshment.

Facial vessels

Facial vessels can leave the skin looking persistently red, flushed or uneven. IPL can be used to target concerns such as thread veins, red spots and general facial redness, including rosacea-related flushing. The light energy is absorbed by the blood vessels, heating them so they can then be broken down and naturally reabsorbed by the body. As the treated vessels clear, the complexion looks calmer, brighter and more balanced.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation concerns such as sun spots, age spots, freckles and areas of sun damage can often be improved with IPL. The light is absorbed by excess melanin within the pigmented lesion, which helps break down the pigment and encourages the skin’s natural healing response. This makes pigmentation treatment a popular choice for clients who want a more flawless, even-looking complexion. Superficial pigmentation tends to respond best, which is why an assessment is so important before treatment.

Acne

IPL can also be used as part of an acne treatment plan. ReBright technology is designed to help reduce inflammation, lessen the severity and frequency of breakouts, and improve the appearance of post-acne redness and pigmentation. The treatment works by targeting overactive sebaceous glands and stimulating collagen, which can also support skin texture and superficial acne scarring. For clients struggling with ongoing breakouts as well as the marks they leave behind, IPL can be an excellent treatment option.

illumiFacial

The illumiFacial is an advanced four-stage treatment designed to leave the skin looking fresher, clearer and more luminous. It combines a cleanse, a Tri-Fruit Acid Peel, Lynton ReBright IPL and a final hydration and protection step using a trio of serums. This makes it ideal for skin that feels congested, looks discoloured or is showing visible signs of ageing. It is a fantastic choice for clients who want that airbrushed, radiant look while also improving the overall health, texture and appearance of the skin.

What does IPL feel like?

Most IPL treatments are described as quick and tolerable. Clients often compare the sensation to a brief warm flick or pin prick on the skin. The illumiFacial may also create a slight tingling feeling when the peel is first applied, but this settles quickly. While treatment can be mildly uncomfortable in some areas, anaesthesia is generally not required and sessions are usually very fast.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed will depend on your skin concern and the treatment being carried out. Skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, facial vessels and illumiFacial treatments are commonly performed as a course of around 3 to 6 sessions, usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Acne often requires a slightly longer course, with a minimum of 4 and up to 8 treatments at 4-week intervals often recommended for best results. Some clients notice visible improvement after the first session, while others achieve the best outcome through a full course and occasional maintenance appointments.

Is IPL right for me?

Most people are suitable for IPL, but consultation and assessment are essential. Suitability can depend on the concern being treated, your skin tone, whether the skin is tanned, and the type of pigmentation or lesion present. For example, superficial sun-related pigmentation tends to respond better than large, dark, mottled or raised lesions, and some concerns may need a different treatment pathway. We will always assess your skin properly before recommending IPL so you can feel confident that your treatment plan is both safe and appropriate.
